Sittwe, also Akyab, city, western Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), capital of Rakhine State, on the eastern coast of Akyab Island, on the Kaladan River. Once a fishing village, Sittwe is now an important seaport. The island was of strategic importance during World War II. Captured by the Japanese in 1942 and retaken by the British in 1945, it was a base in the reconquest of Myanmar.
