George Town, formerly Pinang or Penang, city, northwestern Malaysia, on the island of Pinang, capital of Pinang State, in the Strait of Malacca. One of the country's major seaports, it is a distribution point for rubber and agricultural products. Settled in 1786 by agents of the English East India Company, the community prospered as a port of call for ships trading between India and China. The Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas, the University of Science (1969), and an art museum are in George Town.
