Yamagata, city in Japan, on northern Honshu Island, capital of Yamagata Prefecture. It is a center of silk reeling; iron, copper, and lacquerwares are also produced here. Among the principal points of interest are a Shinto shrine built in the 8th century AD and a castle dating from the feudal period. The city is the seat of Yamagata University (1949).
