Sendai, city, Japan, capital of Miyagi Prefecture, eastern Honshu Island. The city is important as a trading center for salt and fish. The principal industries include the manufacture of beer, silk, pottery, and lacquerware. Sendai is the seat of Tohoku University (1907) and Tohoku Gakuin University. Also of interest in the city are the ruined 17th-century castle on Aoba Hill, the Rinnoji horticultural park, and the Osaki Hachiman shrine, designated a national treasure. Matsu Island (Matsu-shima), an island that is one of the classic scenic sites of Japan, is nearby.
