Imabari, city in southern Japan on the north coast of Shikoku Island in northern Ehime Prefecture on the Takanawa Peninsula. Imabari is on the Hiuchi Sea, which is a part of the Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu islands. It has developed as a center of the cotton-textile industry, specializing in the production of cotton towels. It is also a fishing port. A bridge system is under construction between Imabari and Onomichi, in Hiroshima Prefecture on Honshu Island. Economic growth on Shikoku is expected to be stimulated after completion of the bridge, scheduled for 1998, because of improved access to Japan's biggest cities and industrial regions. Imabari Castle in Fukiage Park is the city's main visitor attraction. The castle was built in 1600, when Imabari was established as the administrative headquarters of Iyo Province, the domain of the feudal lord Todo Takatora. Population (1999) 118,549.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Imabari Information info
