Yao, city in south central Japan, on Honshu Island, in central Osaka Prefecture. Yao is located on the outskirts of the Osaka metropolis. Industries include the manufacture of toothbrushes and thread. Yao is linked to nearby cities by an expressway and by passenger-rail lines. The city has several Buddhist temples built between the 13th and 17th centuries.
Yao encompasses what was once Kyuhoji, a village built in 1470, along with the Kensho Temple, by the Buddhist sect Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land). The streets of Kyuhoji were laid out in a grid like those in the well-protected castle settlements of Japan's daimyo (feudal lords).
