Tokyo Prefecture, Tama - - Pictures

Tama, city in Japan, on central Honshu Island, in south central Tokyo Prefecture 30 km (20 mi) west of downtown Tokyo. Tama is on the Tama River in an area known as the Tama Hills. Once a farming village surrounded by fields, Tama is now primarily a residential suburb of Tokyo. A large part of Tama is a planned residential development named Tama New Town, which also extends into the neighboring cities of Machida, Hachioji, and Inagi. Developed by both the Tokyo and the Japanese governments since 1967, Tama New Town has a population of about 313,000 and a projected population of more than 400,000. The development's main commercial center, called Tama Center, is within Tama city. Its hub is Tama Center Station, served by two rail lines to downtown Tokyo, the Keio Sagamihara Line and the Odakyu Line. A monorail line is being constructed to connect Tama Center with new housing clusters in the vicinity. Both Tama New Town and Tama city are known for their abundant greenery. Landscaped parks and other recreation areas, as well as several popular golf courses and country clubs, are in the hills of the city. Tama attained city status in 1971. Between 1985 and 1990 Tama was the fastest-growing area of Tokyo Prefecture, with a gain in population of 18.3 percent. Population (1990) 144,489.
