Koganei, city in central Japan, on east central Honshu Island, in Tokyo Prefecture about 23 km (about 14 mi) west of downtown Tokyo. Once part of a productive agricultural area, the city is now mainly a residential suburb for employment centers in Tokyo. The main passenger-rail line serving the city is the Chuo Line of the Japan Railway system. The Seibu Tamagawa Line runs through the southeastern corner of the city. Koganei has a number of education institutions, including the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (founded in 1949), Tokyo Gakugei University (1949), and the Research Center for Ion Beam Technology (1979), an institute of Hosei University (1880). The No River flows through the southern part of the city. Koganei Park is a popular recreation facility and the site of a local museum on the city's northern side. Koganei was established as a city in 1958. Population (1999) 106,478.
