Higashi-kurume, city in Japan on east central Honshu Island, in north central Tokyo Prefecture at the boundary with Saitama Prefecture. Higashi-kurume is situated in the Musashino Plateau, about 30 km (about 19 mi) west of downtown Tokyo. Bottling plants for several beverage manufacturers are located here. Higashi-kurume Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line is the city's primary passenger-rail connection. The farmland and woodland that once characterized the Musashino Plateau have been replaced by industrial and housing developments. Much of the housing in Higashi-kurume is in the form of planned clusters of multistoried apartment blocks, or danchi, that were built by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for its employees and their families. Higashi-kurume attained city status in 1970. It has developed in recent years as a residential district for commuters to other parts of the Tokyo metropolis. Population (1999) 113,311.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Higashi-kurume Information info
