Tokyo Prefecture, Chofu - - Pictures

Chofu, city in Japan, on east central Honshu Island, in south central Tokyo Prefecture about 20 km (about 12.5 mi) west of downtown Tokyo. Chofu is bordered by Setagaya Ward to the east and the Tama River and Kanagawa Prefecture to the south. Important employment centers in Chofu include several research institutes and technical schools and colleges. The city is served by several passenger-rail lines, including the Keio Line. The modern version of a historic highway runs through the center of the city, carrying heavy traffic between Tokyo and its western suburbs. The city is also accessible by the Chuo Expressway. Chofu Airfield, once a military facility but now a private field for small planes, is in the northwestern part of the city. Nogawa Park and the American School in Japan (founded in 1902) are also in the northwest. The National Aerospace Laboratory, a government research center administered by the Science and Technology Agency, is headquartered in Chofu. The Jindai Botanical Garden and the Jindaiji, a historic temple that is said to date from AD 733, are the city's main attractions. The Tama riverfront is a popular recreation area with many sports facilities. The area around the city's main rail station, Chofu Station, is a thriving commercial district.
