Ashikaga, city in Japan, in Tochigi Prefecture, on central Honshu Island. The city has an extensive trade in cotton and silk textiles. Ashikaga is famous for an academy of Chinese learning, believed to have been founded in the 9th century. It contains a vast library of Chinese literature and is one of the most famous centers of Chinese culture and Confucianism in the world.
