Fujisawa city in Japan, on east central Honshu Island, in south central Kanagawa Prefecture. Fujisawa is located at the head of Sagami Bay (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean), at the mouth of the Sakai River. It is about 20 km (about 12.5 mi) southwest of downtown Yokohama and about 48 km (about 30 mi) southwest of downtown Tokyo. Fujisawa's industries include machinery manufacturing and food processing. The city also has developed as a commuter suburb of Yokohama and Tokyo, to which it is linked by passenger rail. Local attractions include Katase Beach, Enoshima Aquarium (founded in 1956), and Eno Island in Sagami Bay, the site of a popular Shinto shrine. Fujisawa is also noted as the site of the temple Yugyoji, established in 1325 as the main temple of the Ji sect of Pure Land Buddhism. During the Edo period (1603-1867) Fujisawa was founded as a post-station town (an officially regulated settlement catering to travelers) on the Tokaido, the main historic highway between Edo (now Tokyo) and Kyoto.
