Maebashi, city on central Honshu Island, Japan, capital of Gunma Prefecture, on the Tone River. The city, on the Ryomo rail line, is a center of silk-yarn and textile spinning and was the site of an aircraft plant during World War II (1939-1945). A provincial center since the 8th century, Maebashi was a former castle seat of the Matsudaira family during the Edo period (1603-1867). Maebashi Park affords a panorama of the nearby mountains.
