Kiryu, city in Japan, on central Honshu Island, in eastern Gunma Prefecture about 90 km (about 56 mi) northwest of downtown Tokyo. Kiryu is on the Watarase River, which runs through the city from neighboring Tochigi Prefecture. Kiryu has long been a silk manufacturer known for its high-quality products, and silkworms are cultivated in the mulberry fields surrounding the city. Machinery, automobile parts, metals, and food products are also manufactured in Kiryu. The city is well connected by road and rail to neighboring cities and Tokyo. The Ryomo Line and the Watarase Keikoku Line are the main passenger-rail lines serving Kiryu.
