Muroran, city in Japan, in southwestern Hokkaido Island, in Hokkaido Prefecture, on Entomo Point and on Uchiura Bay. Muroran is the southern rail terminus of the Muroran Line and a port with steamer connections to both Aomori and Tokyo on the island of Honshu. The city exports coal, paper, and lumber. It is an important producer of iron and steel and has shipbuilding and petroleum-refining facilities.
