Kushiro, city on southeastern Hokkaido Island, Japan, in Hokkaido Prefecture, on the Pacific Ocean, at the mouth of the Kushiro River. A road and rail junction, Kushiro is a port and center of an extensive fishing industry. Timber, coal, and processed fish are exported. Other industries include the canning of fish; the processing of fish oil and agricultural and marine products; and the manufacture of paper, pulp, and wood products. Dairying is carried on, and nearby is the Kushiro coalfield. Akan National Park is north of the city. Kushiro was settled in the 1870s.
