Matsue, city and seaport on southwestern Honshu Island, Japan, administrative center of Shimane Prefecture. As part of the Nakaumi New Industrial City, Matsue is a commercial and distributing center. Matsue was a castle town during the Edo period (1603-1867) and the castle, several temples, and an 18th-century teahouse attract many tourists. Writer Lafcadio Hearn lived in Matsue in the 1890s; a museum was established there in his honor. It is the site of Shimane University (1949).
