Fujinomiya, city in central Japan on Honshu Island, in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. Fujinomiya is located at the southwestern base of Fuji, Japan's highest mountain. Fujinomiya's industry is linked to the larger city of Fuji, which is located about 10 km (about 6 mi) to the south. Its main products are paper and chemicals. The city is included in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Japan's most popular vacation area, and is the base for sightseeing tours of the area. Shiraito (White Thread) Falls at the foot of the mountain and the Buddhist Taisekiji Temple are local attractions. Fujinomiya is a staging area for religious pilgrimages to the mountain and the site for annual Fuji-related festivals in May and November. Fujinomiya's name means “Fuji shrine” and refers to a Shinto shrine in the city that is the central shrine of a cult that venerates the mountain.
