Fuji, city in central Japan on Honshu Island, in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. Fuji is located at the head of Suruga Bay (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean) in a narrow plain at the southern base of Japan's highest mountain, also called Fuji. One of the key cities of the Tokai Industrial Region, Fuji specializes in the production of pulp and paper, chemicals, film, machinery, and pharmaceuticals. The Tokaido Shinkansen high-speed “bullet” train passes through the city, as do other passenger trains and the Tomei Expressway, the main highway between Tokyo and southern Honshu. During the Edo period (1603-1867) Fuji developed as a settlement catering to travelers along the Tokaido, the historic main highway between Edo (now Tokyo) and Kyoto.
