Nagano, city in Japan, on central Honshu Island, capital of Nagano Prefecture. Manufactures include silk textiles, printed materials, and machinery. Nagano is famous for its Buddhist Zenko Temple (Zenkoji), which contains one of the country's oldest representations of Buddha, a bronze statue that probably dates back to the 6th century AD. Shinshu University (1949) is in Nagano. The 1998 Winter Olympics took place in Nagano. The city was established around the 12th to the 13th century, and was formerly called Zenkoji.
