Matsumoto, city on central Honshu Island, Japan, in Nagano Prefecture. Industries include traditional woodworking, dairy products, the manufacture of silks and baskets, and the preserving of fruits. One of the five campuses of Shinshu University (1949) is located here. Matsumoto castle, completed in 1595, is a designated national treasure of Japan.
