Seto, city in central Japan, on Honshu Island, in northern Aichi Prefecture. Seto is about 18 km (about 11 mi) northeast of Nagoya and is one of the principal satellite cities of the Nagoya metropolitan region. It is an important industrial center with the largest ceramics industry in Japan. The center of the city has many old kilns and ceramics shops. Based on local deposits of potter's clay, the ceramics industry in Seto began on a commercial basis in the 12th or 13th century. It now produces Western and Japanese dinnerware, vases, tiles, bathroom fixtures, and electrical conductors, as well as other products for both domestic markets and export. Seto is so closely associated with ceramics production in Japan that the Japanese word for porcelain or earthenware is setomono, literally, “thing from Seto.”; Population (1999) 127,946.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
