Probolinggo, city in central Indonesia, on the northern coast and eastern end of the island of Java, on the Java Sea in East Java Province. Situated southeast of the provincial capital Surabaya, Probolinggo is an important transportation center. A major east-west road and railway pass through the city, which is home to a port. Along with the nearby towns of Malang and Pasuruan, Probolinggo produces basic chemicals, clothing, textiles, and food products. The city is a departure point to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, home to Bromo, a spectacular crater within a crater that emerged from the caldera of the ancient Tengger volcano. During the Dutch colonial period (which ended in 1949), Probolinggo was a center for sugarcane, indigo, and coffee production. Under the Dutch system of farming know as the Cultivation System, Probolinggo was home to 10 percent of Java's sugar mills.
