Pematangsiantar, city, western Indonesia, on the island of Sumatra, in North Sumatra Province, near Medan. It is the terminus of a railroad from Medan and a trade center for rice, rubber, tea, tobacco, fibers, and oil palms. The development of the area occurred mainly after 1900. Population (1997 estimate) 232,900.
