Madiun, city in southwestern Indonesia, on the island of Java, in the Madiun River plain. The city is the trade center of an agricultural area producing sugar, rice, coffee, corn, cassava, tobacco, and cinchona bark; Madiun also contains a variety of industrial plants, including railroad workshops and textile and lumber mills. It was capital of the residency of Madiun, or Madioen, under Dutch rule.
