Cimahi, city in western Indonesia, on the western part of the island of Java. Cimahi lies just west of Bandung, the capital of the province of West Java. With central Bandung only 45 minutes away by road, Cimahi has become an important commuter suburb within greater Bandung. Settlement between Cimahi and Bandung is continuous. Cimahi has a large army base and army school, dating from the Dutch colonial occupation of Indonesia (which ended in 1949) and used today by Indonesia's armed forces. The large amount of land occupied by the army in and around Cimahi has slowed the expansion of new residential areas, which in turn has forced growth around Bandung to move south of the city. Cimahi was established as a city in 1887. Population (1990) 344,607.
