Bandung, also Bandoeng, a city in Indonesia, capital of West Java Province. Bandung is situated in the uplands of western Java at an elevation of 715 m (nearly 2400 ft) and was established partly because of the cool, upland climate. The city is a major industrial center and the cultural capital of the Sundanese people. Bandung was founded by Dutch settlers in 1810 and subsequently became the military and administrative headquarters of the Netherlands East Indies. Modern industrialization began after the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century.
