Dehra Dun, city in northern India, capital of Uttaranchal state. Located at the foot of the Himalayas, Dehra Dun is a commercial center and resort. The city is well connected by rail to New Delhi, the national capital. The chief point of interest in the city is a temple, dating from 1699, which is regarded as an example of classical Muslim architecture. Dehra Dun has several institutions of higher learning, including the Forest Research Institute (founded in 1906).
