Mirzapur, city in northern India, in Uttar Pradesh state. Located on the banks of the Ganges River, Mirzapur is the trade center of an agricultural area. Also an industrial city, it manufactures carpets, textiles, and brassware. Sandstone is quarried nearby, and there is a hydroelectric station. Mirzapur is home to many mosques and Hindu temples, including the temple of the goddess Kali. It was the largest cotton and grain trading center on the Ganges River throughout the early and mid-19th century, until the East Indian Railway opened and replaced much of the river traffic.
