Mathura, formerly Muttra, city, northern India, in Uttar Pradesh State, capital of Mathura District, on the Yamuna River, near Agra. For centuries it has been a center of Hinduism and is said to be the birthplace of the god Krishna. The name of the city was changed in 1948. Population (1991) 226,691.
