Jhansi, city, central India, in Uttar Pradesh State. The city is a rail, trade, and industrial center, with railway workshops and iron and steel mills. Products manufactured in the city include brassware, rugs, rubber, and silk goods. The city developed around a fort built in 1613 and strengthened in 1742. It was the scene of a massacre of British residents in 1857 during the Sepoy Rebellion. Population (1991) 300,850.
