Gorakhpur, city, northern India, in Uttar Pradesh State, on the Rapti River, a tributary of the Ghaghra. Gorakhpur is a railroad hub, a trading center for grain and timber, and the site of Gorakhpur University, founded in 1957. Population (1991) 505,566.
