Farrukhabad, city in north central India on a fertile plain on the southwestern bank of the Ganges River. Located centrally in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Farrukhabad is united with the neighboring town of Fatehgarh. The combined city is the capital of the district of Farrukhabad. It receives 100 cm (40 in) of rain during the hot summer months. The winter season is relatively cool and dry.
Founded about 1714 by a provincial Mughal governor, Farrukhabad was captured by the Afghans and later by the Mahrattas. Gerard Lake, British commander in chief in India, captured the city in 1804, and it remained part of British India until 1947. During the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857, many British residents of Fatehgarh attempted escape in boats after the town's fort was taken, but they were captured and massacred. British forces recaptured the city the following year.
