Budaun, city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in north central India. Budaun is located 197 km (122 mi) east of Delhi in a well-watered, almost level section of the upper Gangetic Plain. The rainfall, most of which occurs during the summer, varies from 760 to 1250 mm (30 to 50 in) a year. Winters are clear, cool, and dry and the springs are hot and cloudy. Budaun is the market center of an agricultural district.
Budaun was founded about AD 900 and developed around a fort, now in ruins. In 1196 the city fell to the Muslims, who constructed a large mosque in 1296 from the ruins of a Hindu temple. The community was burned in 1571 and rebuilt. In 1801 Budaun was ceded to the British, who established a post there in 1838. Population (1991) 116,695.
