Vellore, city, southern India, in Tamil Nadu State, on the Palar River. Vellore is a hub of flower growing and of trade in agricultural products. It also is a medical center. The chief point of interest is an ancient fort, an outstanding example of Indian military architecture, which was held for two years (1780-1782) by British forces under siege by the maharaja Haidar Ali. A short but bloody revolt of Indian troops against the British occurred at the fort in 1806. The fort encloses a Hindu temple noted for its magnificent sculptures.
