Tiruppur, city in southern India, in western Tamil Nadu state, located on the Noyil River. Tiruppur means “sacred city” in Tamil, the official language of the state. Tiruppur is a cotton ginning and trading center, more than half of its workforce is employed in manufacturing, and a significant minority works in trading activities. A major rail line and a national highway link the city with other parts of India. The nearest airports are in Coimbatore and Chennai (formerly known as Madras). A temple devoted to the Hindu god Shiva brings many pilgrims to Tiruppur during the annual Chariot Festival, held in May and June.
