Kumbakonam, famous temple city in the Thanjarur district of Tamil Nadu State, southeastern India. It is situated on a distributary of the Cauvery River about 48 km (30 mi) west of Karikal. The city receives from 750 to 1300 mm (30 to 50 in) of rainfall per year, most of it during the winter. The summers are relatively dry, and high temperatures prevail throughout the year. Once the capital of the Chola Kingdom, which dominated the area from the 10th to the 13th century, Kumbakonam retains many historic temples and pagodas. The city also possesses a modern college.
