Port Blair, town on South Andaman Island, capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India. Port Blair lies on the east coast of the island, about 1361 km (about 851 mi) east of the Indian mainland at Chennai (formerly Madras). Port Blair is the largest town and the administrative, trade, and commercial capital of the union territory. Tourism is one of the main industries, and timber and rubber from the local forests are exported. There is a harbor and an airport with flights to mainland India. A notable building is the Cellular Jail, a former penal colony for Indian freedom fighters that was constructed by the British about 1900 and abolished as a jail in 1945.
