Jodhpur, city, northwestern India, in Rajasthan State. The city is the trade center for the surrounding region in which grains are grown and is an important rail junction. The handicrafts industry turns out embroidered items and decorated leather goods and ivory, lacquer, and metal ornaments. Points of interest include a wall surrounding the old part of Jodhpur and a fort, containing several old palaces, on a nearby hilltop. The University of Jodhpur (1962) is here. The city was founded in 1459 and was the capital of the former native state of Jodhpur, or Marwar, until 1949.
