Alwar, city in northern India, in Rajasthan state, capital of Alwar District. In part because of its position on the Delhi-Jaipur railway, Alwar is a successful market for agricultural, textile, and manufactured goods. The city is circled by a wall and moat, has several fine palaces and temples and a library containing rare Asian manuscripts. Also located in Alwar are a medieval fort and a huge palace complex, which now houses city government and a museum. Sariska Tiger Reserve and National Park, home to wildlife, ruined temples, pavilions, a fort, and a palace, is located 35 km (22 mi) from Alwar. Before the partition of India in 1947, the city served as the capital of the princely state of Alwar. Population (1991) 205,086.
