Raurkela, city in eastern India, in northern Orissa State, located on the banks of Brahmani River on the northeastern Deccan Plateau. A planned city, Raurkela was built around a government-owned steel plant. The plant was a collaborative effort with West Germany and began production in 1959. By-products of the plant, for instance nitrogen, are used in other industries in the city, such as a fertilizer factory. Raurkela is served by a major rail line and a national highway. The city has its own domestic airport, but Ranchi and Kolkata are the nearest airports with regular service.
