Imphal, city in eastern India, capital of Manipur state. It is a picturesque city, lying in the Manipur River valley and surrounded by the hills and plains of India's northeastern mountain region. Imphal is the state's center for cultural traditions, festivals, and Manipuri dance. The city also handles the commerce of Manipur. The products of household industries, including woven goods, brassware, and bronzeware, are collected from different parts of the state and marketed in Imphal. Agricultural and electronics industries are also part of Imphal's economy. The city is served by two national highways and an airport with connections to Kolkata and Gauhati. Imphal and Dhana Manjhari colleges, as well as the Central Institute for Plastic Engineering and Technology, are located in Imphal. Once the seat of the kings of Manipur, Imphal became the capital of Manipur Native State, a seminautonomous state within British India, in 1826. It remained the capital when Manipur became part of independent India in 1947. In 1944, during World War II, the British stopped the advancement of the Japanese into India in an important battle at Imphal.
