Sangli, city in western India, in southwestern Maharashtra state. Sangli is the former capital (1761-1947) of the Sangli native state. It is located at the confluence of the Krishna and Varna rivers. Sangli is a major national market center for turmeric and oil seeds and a regional center for peanuts, gur (a type of sugar), and chili peppers. Other industries include the manufacture of cotton textiles, vegetable oils, and cigarettes. A major rail line and a national highway pass through Sangli. The nearest airport is in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay), about 300 km (about 200 mi) to the northwest. Sangli's Hindu temple attracts many pilgrims.
