Pimpri-Chinchwad, municipality in western India, in Maharashtra state. It is located along the Mumbai-Pune road and rail corridor, northwest of Pune—an area that has attracted many industries, including a boiler-making factory in Chinchwad and a sugar refinery and a pharmaceutical company in Pimpri. The nearest international airport is in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay). The municipality experienced tremendous population growth during the 1970s and 1980s, growing more than 600% in that time.
