Ellora, village, central India, in Maharashtra State, near Aurangabad. Ellora is noted for its cave temples cut out of solid rock between the 4th and 10th centuries AD. Of the 19 large temples, some are Brahman and others Buddhist and Jain in origin. The Brahman Dumnar Lena temple is the largest, measuring 46 m (150 ft) each way; the most spectacular is the Brahman Kailasa Temple, 42 m (138 ft) wide by 27 m (88 ft) deep.
