Ahmadnagar, city in western India, in Maharashtra state, on the Sina River east of Mumbai. It is situated on the eastern side of the Western Ghats and on the edge of the Deccan Plateau. The rolling plateaus and flat-topped ridges are underlain with lava, and the vegetation is sparse. The city was settled by the 15th century, and it was prosperous until captured by the mostly Hindu Mahrattas in 1797. The British under General Arthur Wellesley took control of the city in 1803. Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru was held prisoner in its fort from 1942 to 1945.
