Burhanpur, city in central India, in Madhya Pradesh State, on the Tapi River. The town has many mosques and tombs and a palace built by the Mughal emperor Akbar. Silver and gold brocades, gold wire, and a variety of other high-quality products are produced in Burhanpur. Founded by Muslims about AD1400, the town was the capital of an independent principality until the reign of Akbar, who made it one of his provincial administrative centers. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the town was the center of much of the internecine strife then current in India. Burhanpur was under British control from 1861 to 1947.
