Bokaro, city in northeastern India, located in Jharkhand state, on the banks of the Bokaro River. The city is the site of a large government-owned steel plant, which started production in 1978. After failing to gain financial and technical aid from the United States for construction of the steel plant, the Indian government in 1965 reached an agreement with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), which provided the necessary support. A major rail line and a national highway link Bokaro to other cities. The nearest domestic airport is in Patna, about 225 km (about 140 mi) to the northwest, in Bihar state. Population (1991) 333,683.
