Srinagar, city in the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir capital of the Indian-controlled portion administered as Jammu and Kashmir State. Located on the Jhelum River, Srinagar is within the valley of the Jhelum, known as the Vale of Kashmir. A resort and tourist center, Srinagar is also a center for the manufacture of carpets, silk, and wool. In and around the city are many old buildings and ruins. The University of Kashmir (1969) is here. Also in Srinagar are a 7th-century temple and a 16th-century fort, and nearby are extensive Buddhist ruins. Srinagar was founded in the 6th century.
