Jammu, city in the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, in the Indian-controlled portion that is administered as Jammu and Kashmir state. Located on the Tawi River, Jammu is situated in an agricultural area in which maize, rice, and wheat are the principal crops. In Jammu are the University of Jammu (1969), a large palace, and a fort. Jammu was conquered by the religious community of the Sikhs, under their leader Ranjit Singh in 1819. From 1846 until the partition of British India in 1947, British supremacy was recognized in Jammu.
